Driving Safety Tips
Being
a careful and responsible driver can help save lives on the
road.
All
of us have to, at one time or another, drive or be driven in
a car. Even if it is to go just ½ mile down the road
we all opt to take the car instead of walking. With more and
more people driving their cars every day, the higher the chance
you have for having an accident. Some accidents are just minor
but others can be fatal. Just by heeding a few car driving safety
tips can help you lessen the chance of being involved in an
accident.
There
are several things you, as a responsible, safe driver, can do
to keep you and your passengers safe while going from point
A to point B in your vehicle:
- Be
Alert - it sounds so simple, but many automobile accidents
are caused by the driver just not paying attention. Keep a
watchful eye on the road and look carefully at traffic when
going through intersections. Watch for traffic lights, stop
signs, and oncoming traffic. Keep your eyes on the road and
your head in your driving. Never drive your car when you are
overly tired.
- Drive
the speed limit - Driving moderately can greatly decrease
your risk in being involved in a serious automobile accident.
Speeding was a factor in 30 percent of all fatal car accidents
in the U.S. in 1999. Give yourself enough time to get to your
destination so you can take your time and enjoy the drive.
- Avoid
drinking and driving - Do not take chances when it comes
to drinking and driving your car. If you plan to drink, get
a designated driver. With strict laws and driver awareness,
fatal automobile accidents caused by drinking and driving
have declined in the last 10 years, but we still have a long
way to go. Keep the roads safer and never drink and drive.
- Maintain
your vehicle - Keep your tires properly inflated. Fix
broken or burned out headlights and taillights as soon as
possible. If you have a driver's side crack in your windshield,
have it replaced. Ensure all your mirrors are in proper working
order.
- Wear
your seat belts - Wearing your seat belts and properly
restraining children can reduce injury if involved in an automobile
accident. Even the slightest collision can cause injury if
your seat belt is not on and fastened properly. Always use
the lap belt with the shoulder belt. Ensure all your passengers
are also properly restrained before venturing out on the highway.
- Turn
headlights on before it gets dark - Driving just before
sunup or early in the evening can be one of the most hazardous
times on the road. Do not forget to use your headlights during
this time. It is easier for people in other cars to see you
when you have your headlights on. Another rule of thumb is
when your turn your windshield wipers on, turn your head lights
on.
Driving
safely is everyone's responsibility, so be an educated driver.
Be patient and courteous on the road. Avoid driving in the passing
lane. Always use your turn signals. Keep a safe distance between
you and vehicle in front of you. Keep your headlights on low
beam when driving against traffic at night. By heeding these
car driving safety tips you have a better chance of keeping
everyone safe on the roads.
